William Sauer

June 11, 1926 — May 23, 2016

William ‘Bill' Sauer passed away in Casper, Wyoming on May 23, 2016. He was 89 years old. Born in Minatare, Nebraska, on June 11, 1926, Bill was the fourth of ten children. He served his country in France and Germany during World War II, joining the 102 Infantry, 3rd Army Battalion under General Patton. In 1959, Bill became a tool pusher for Prairie Drilling Company, which he later bought. He eventually changed the name of the company to W.E. Sauer Drilling. Bill successfully ran his company until he sold it to Tom Brown Company in 1998. Bill was an accomplished golfer and loved to spend time playing cards, especially Gin, with close friends. Bill was a member of the Petroleum Club for many years, his card being number 17. He also served his community through the Rotary, Elks and Eagles organizations and was a member of the I.A.D.C. and the Casper Country Club. Bill leaves behind his wife Betty; three children, his son Bill Jr. Sauer( Ruth), his daughters Joyce Johnson ( Mel), and Joann McGuire( Joe), step-children Dave Smith (Diane), Mike Smith (Liliana) and Jane Crawford (Steve). Also, his brothers, Bob Sauer (Betty), Paul Sauer (Valerie), Ken Sauer( Karen), and his sister Renee Bunner (Ray). Bill joins his family in heaven including mother Mary, father Henry, sister Alma, brothers Harold, Gene and Ernie and daughter Michelle. He leaves behind many special grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, dear friends and dog, Jake. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am, on Friday, May 27th at Oregon Trail State Veterans Cemetery. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, June 11th (Bill's 90th birthday!) at a location to be announced. The family suggests memorial contributions be sent to Central Wyoming Hospice & Transitions, 319 S. Wilson St., Casper.
