Verna Summerford

Graveside services for Verna C. Summerford, 99 will be held at Highland Cemetery on August 6th at 10AM with Pastor Jack Damien of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church presiding. Visitation will be held on August 5th from 4-7PM at Bustard's Funeral Home. Verna passed away peacefully July 31st at Meadow Wind Assisted Living. She was born April 12, 1916 in Muscatine, Iowa to Lloyd and Lena (Kirchner) Taylor. She graduated from Lutheran Hospital School of Nursing in Moline, Illinois May of 1937, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree from Augustana College. She met her future husband Ed Summerford Sr. there. They were married in 1939. She worked at the University of Iowa Hospital while her husband attended graduate school. They lived in Tulsa and Oklahoma City, Oklahoma for five years, and were transferred to Casper in 1945. Verna worked with the Grant School PTA, and the Natrona County PTA council. She was a Cub Scout Den Mother, and a Girl Scout Brownie Leader. Verna was a member of the American Association of University Women and enjoyed participating in the associations readers group until she was 90 years old. She was a member of the Fort Casper Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and a charter member of Casper GEO Wives. Verna was member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church for over 70 years where she served on the Church Library Committee for 20 years, Altar Guild, and was a member of Mary Martha's Circle. For 13 years, Verna worked as a school nurse for the Natrona County School District. Her responsibilities included CY Junior High, Westwood Elementary, and several rural schools of Natrona County. She enjoyed flower gardening, needle point, latch hook, playing bridge, and walking her dogs in Nancy English Park. She loved and enjoyed her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Verna was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, husband, and three sons. She is survived by her daughters; Christine and Lonna, grandchildren; Dawn Stewart, Michael Summerford, Riley Huss, and great grandchildren all of Casper. Memorials may be made to Our Saviour's Lutheran Church or to a charity of your choice.
