Verna Landess

Services for Mrs. Verna June Landess will be held at 2:00 PM, Friday, October 3, 2014 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 7th and Missouri. Viewing will be from 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Thursday, October 2, 2014 at Bustard's Funeral Home and at 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM, Friday, October 3, 2014 at the Church prior to the services. Interment will be at Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Verna June (Laing) Landess, age 86, abruptly passed away September 25, 2014 at Wyoming Medical Center due to cardiac arrest. June was born in Alliance, Nebraska on June 29, 1928, the 9th of 12 children born to John Andrew & Margaret Olive (Colgrove) Laing. In 1945 she married Charles Dallas (aka Buck) Landess, a long haul oil field truck driver, in Roundup, Montana and together they raised 4 children, 2 boys and 2 girls while frequently moving between the states of Wyoming and Montana until his demise in 1971. Buck's occupation and multiple relocations required June to become fairly self-reliant and as eldest son, Jerry was serving in the Navy and daughters, Helen and Debra were married, his death left to finish rearing 10 year old son, Don, alone. She accomplished this by procuring employment at Wyoming Medical Center as a telephone operator and worked for 16 plus years until she reached her own retirement. She remained a widow for more than 43 years. June was a lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, serving in various capacities over the years, very often as a Primary teacher. She loved to sing, chorded and played piano by ear, made all sorts of handy crafts, was skilled at bread making, canning, and general homemaking. She thoroughly enjoyed attending her son's and grandson's sporting events, ever ready to insist the other teams had unfair advantage if it looked like they "were all way bigger than our boys". She was especially proud of her vast salt and pepper collection and enjoyed the show and tell with any visitors. June was preceded in death by her parents and 10 of her siblings, but leaves to mourn her passing, one sister, Joyce Hinrich of Ogden, UT, sisters in-law and in-love, Juanita Laing of Casper, Shirley Laing of Cumberland, WI, children, Jerry Landess of Casper, Helen (Leonard) Follmer of Miles City, MT, Debra Dyer, and Don (Carita) Landess, both of Casper, 13 grandchildren,18 great grandchildren, and 2 great, great grandchildren as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
