Stephen Nicholas

July 29, 1926 — October 1, 2018

Stephen "Sonny" Lewis Nicholas dies at 92 years of age Stephen "Sonny" Lewis Nicholas died Monday, October 1, 2018, from complications of diabetes mellitus after a short period of home hospice care. He was 92 years old. The funeral will be Thursday, October 4, at 11:00 a.m. at First United Methodist Church. Burial will be at Memorial Gardens Cemetery. A reception for family and friends will follow the burial. Visitation will be Wednesday, October 3, from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Bustard's Funeral Home. Stephen was known affectionately by many names, not just Sonny but also Nick, Bud, Lewis, and Steve. He did not care what he was called, he said, "So long as you don't call me late for dinner". He was not a club man, but had he been, Eggington's would have been his club. For many years, over breakfast, he carried forth there, affably hosting innumerable family members and friends. Stephen was born at home in Casper, Wyoming, July 29, 1926, to William Evan and Ethel Nicholas. Following graduation from Natrona County High School in 1944, he worked at the Texaco Refinery until 1950. He then was hired by the Natrona County School District, where for the next 36 years he worked variously as bus driver, custodian, and maintenance supervisor. He retired in 1986. He married Helen Gould from Bellville, Texas, on September 5, 1948, at the First Baptist Church in Casper. They were charter members of the Bethel Baptist Church in 1955, where he served as a Sunday School teacher, a deacon, and a trustee. Years later, they joined the First United Methodist Church. Stephen loved to sing, and he had that rare talent of being a tenor. He sang in a church choir nearly 60 years. He was a member of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America, and he sang with the Casper Oil City Slickers Barber Shoppers. However, his biggest hobby was creek fishing and camping. He called the Big Horn Mountains his home away from home. He served as scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop #48 for many years. In January 2009, he was preceded in death by in his wife of 60 years. He is survived by his daughter Barbara Ann Nicholas-Elliott of Casper, Wyoming, and her three sons and eight grandchildren; Dr. Stephen William Nicholas and his wife, Ellen Sargent, of Mount Kisco, New York, and their four children; Professor Kenneth Evan Nicholas and his wife, Minda, of Huntsville, Alabama, and their three children and three grandchildren; and Susan L. Skeie of Rapid City, South Dakota, and her 8 children and 15 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and five sisters. Donations are requested in lieu of flowers to the American Diabetes Association. Donations may be made to: American Diabetes Association 2451 Crystal Drive Suite 900, Arlington VA 22202 Tel: 1-800-342-2383 Web: http://diabetes.org
