In loving memory of Sidney Dean Applegate, 84, who passed away August 6, 2014 and who will be greatly missed by his family. Sidney or "Sid" to his friends was born on July 13, 1930 near Peru, Nebraska as the youngest of ten children. He graduated from High School in Peru in 1948. Sid served in the U.S. Navy from 1951 through 1955 with an overseas tour to ports in Great Britain and the Mediterranean Sea on the Destroyer USS Cone in 1954. While in the service and stationed at Jacksonville Naval Air Station, he met and married on April 4, 1952, Sarah Ann Justice of Jacksonville, Florida. Following his military service he completed his degree in Education at Peru State College in 1958 and moved to Glenrock for his first teaching assignment immediately thereafter. He became the elementary school principal in 1960 and later earned a master's degree from then Colorado State College in Greeley, Colorado in 1962. Sid served all but one year (1964-1965) of his 32-year career in education in Glenrock. When he retired in 1990 he had served as the elementary school principal in Glenrock for a total of 29 years. He was a longtime member of the Glenrock Community Baptist church, Masonic Lodge, and Glenrock Lion's Club. He was a fixture for many years at the Lion's Club Gold Medal Basketball Tournament where he took care of the concession and tournament finances for the long running men's basketball tournament. Sid loved his family, traveling as long as health allowed, to his large family reunion each summer in Peru, Nebraska. He enjoyed people in general, always willing to strike up a conversation with someone at the local Glenrock establishments where for many years he started his morning with a cup of coffee. He enjoyed playing cards, cook outs in his back yard and visiting Lake Havasu, Arizona in the winter with his wife, Sarah, after his retirement, where they met a new group of friends. He was an avid supporter of his grandkids and loved to attend their school events. He traveled to Chicago when able, to attend events for his grandchildren. Even this last year, as his health declined, he continued to attend numerous basketball games to watch his grandchildren compete in Casper. He was at the State Championship game in March, cheering on a grandson who played for the Kelly Walsh Trojans. Sid was preceded in death by his parents and eight of his siblings. Sid is survived by one sister, Jane Henning, of Peru, Nebraska, his loving wife of 62 years, Sarah Ann, his son Dean (Shelly) of Casper, Wyoming, daughter, Nancy (Tom ) of Chicago, Illinois and their children, Ryan, Katie and Kellie, and son, David (Diana) of Casper and their children, Quinn, Ethan and Emily. A memorial service will be held at the Community Baptist Church in Glenrock at 11:00 AM, Saturday, August 16, 2014. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
