Shirley Volker

January 28, 1923 — May 29, 2017

Shirley Dean Volker January 28, 1923 - May 29, 2017 Shirley passed away on Memorial Day, May 29, 2017 in Casper, Wyoming. She was born in Florence, Colorado, where she spent her first 10 years. Her family moved to Glenrock, Wyoming, where she graduated from Glenrock Parkerton High School. She graduated from California College of Commerce in Long Beach, California. Returning to Wyoming, she worked at Continental Oil Co in Glenrock, then at Wyoming Wool Marketing Co-op and then Union Oil Company in Casper. Shirley's most important role was a mother and homemaker for her family. In Casper, she met and married the love of her life, Eugene Dale Volker on June 4, 1952. For the next 35 years they loved each other completely and built a life together. Their greatest joy was their son William Kenneth Volker. A cabin at the lake, traveling to California and loving the Wyoming life was their journey together. Shirley was a talented artist. She painted, played the piano and organ, did many different crafts, knitted and crocheted. Anyone who knew her benefited from her crocheting; she covered us all in an afghan. She loved fishing and being at the lake. She excelled at bridge, gin and cribbage card games. She was a member of Rainbow girls in Florence, past queen of Glenrock Job Daughters, member Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, past president Xi Alpha Sorority in Casper and a student of Women in the Word. A Christian in every aspect of her life, Shirley was a member of the First Christian Church of Casper. Family was Shirley's life. She loved us all and took in any and all whom she knew and made them family. Many did not realize she on had one child as she always had a group of kids with her and treated them as her own. Her "boys" as she always called them - Kenny, Lee, Lyle and Ray - always made her world light up when they were together. Being the only female most of the time, she was thrilled when her son married, finally giving her a daughter. Sherry was her daughter and she took her, and her family, in from the start. Shirley loved her grandkids, William Kenneth Volker, II and Rachel L. Volker, who meant the world to her. Extended family was just that: family. Devin and Cindy Garvin and their children, her great grandkids, Christian and Ava were brought into the fold and loved. All of our animals were family and loved by her. With the marriage of Kenny to Julie and Rachel being in love with Luke, her world was complete and it was time for her to leave us and join Gene in heaven. She was a grand, loving Lady in everything she did and we were all blessed to have her in our lives. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, William Joseph and Elza Skinner Channell, her beloved brother William Kenneth Channell, niece Carol Channell, extended family Joyce Sullivan, her brother-in-law and sister - in-law Floyd and Joanna Volker, and nephew Dale Volker. She is survived by her son William Kenneth and wife Sherry Volker, grandson and wife William Kenneth and Julie Volker, II, granddaughter Rachel Lynn Volker, nieces Karen, Lori Linda and Lisa, her boys Lee (Patti) Holmes, Douglas Lyle (Susan) Holmes and Ray (Gen) Tuma. Extended family Devin, Cindy, Christian and Ava Garvin, the Sullivan family and many friends. Viewing will be at Bustard's Funeral Home on Thursday, June 1st from 10am to noon.
