Sanford Andrew

February 14, 1933 — August 16, 2012

Sanford Glen (Sam) Andrew died peacefully at home on August 16, 2012. He was born to Glen and Anna Andrew on February 14th, 1933 in Green Forest, Arkansas. When he was three months old his parents moved to Dixon, Wyoming. He graduated from Baggs High School in 1950 where he played basketball and played tenor saxophone in a small dance band. In 1953, he married Nanci Applegate, in Hammond, Indiana. Sam and Nanci both graduated from University of Wyoming, Sam with a BS in geology, and Nanci with a BA in History and English. Sam began his Marathon Oil Company career shortly after graduation in 1957 as an exploration geologist in southern Wyoming. Marathon kept Sam busy with assignments around the west, including Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, Arizona, Montana, Nebraska, North and South Dakota until 1977 when he accepted his first international assignment. In October 1977, the company named Sam Chief Exploration Geologist for Marathon Petroleum Ltd based in Great Britain. His duties covered the entire hemisphere including the North Sea, Europe, Africa, and the Mideast looking for data and prospective sites. He supervised work in the Giant Brae area in the North Sea. His second international assignment was in Canada as Vice President of Marathon Petroleum Canada ltd and exploration manager for Marathon and Pan Ocean Oil ltd. He returned to the United States in 1982 to manage the regional exploration department at Marathon's Denver Research Center. He retired from the later position in 1992 and he and Nanci moved back to Casper. In 1993 the University of Wyoming chose Sam as a 'Distinguished Alumnus' credited with significant world oil finds. International travel was part of Sam's job, but after retirement he and Nanci, continued traveling, up the Panama Canal, along the eastern coast of the U.S., in the Mediterranean Sea, the Caribbean and to Ireland. Before Sam went overseas, Sam was a dedicated volunteer in Casper. He began his voluntary work as president of a local PTA, eventually assuming a spot on the Wyoming State PTA Board. It was through a PTA seminar program that he developed the idea for a similar program in Wyoming. He helped organize a pilot juvenile probation counselor program in Casper initially staffing it with friends from Marathon. The project's goal was to provide role models for young people and show them alternatives to crime. As an out-growth of that work, Sam joined the Municipal Court Juvenile Advisory committee and served two terms as its chair person. It was this group that helped update the juvenile code. Outdoor activities were always important to Sam including hunting elk in the Jackson Hole area, camping with his family and fishing in Wyoming's reservoirs and creeks. Sam loved his family and is survived by his wife, Nanci of 59 years, his children Michael Andrew and his wife Debi of Morgantown, West Virginia; Sandy Andrew, his wife Julie and their children, Samantha (Sammie) and Bret, Allison Andrew of Rosamond, California, his brother, Steve Andrew and his wife Sharon of Fruita, Colorado and 3 nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents. Cremation has taken place and Sam will be buried at a later date in the Reader Cemetery in Savery, Wyoming. Contributions may be made in Sam's name to Amedisys Hospice Services, 907 N. Poplar St., Suite 153, Casper, WY 82601, or The University of Wyoming Foundation, 1200 E.
