RUBY F. SKOGEN was born December 12, 1921, in Scottsbluff, NE, the only daughter to Roy and Jennie (Nation) Meek. She joined four older brothers and then came baby brother Dale. By the age of 12, she was cooking alongside her mother for the thrashing crews. By the age of 14, she took a job at the hospital in Lusk, WY, scrubbing and cleaning wood floors.
Later, her family ventured to Powell, WY, where Dale and Scoop became good friends and Dale introduced Scoop to Ruby. On November 16, 1939, Scoop and Ruby were married in Billings, MT, and started their family on Bales Ranch off the South Fork in Cody, WY, when Ada Kay was born in a cabin. Shortly to join the family were three more girls: Janette, Shirley, and Carol.
In 1950, Ruby, with four girls in tow, followed Scoop to Casper, where she called Salt Creek Hwy home for the next 62 years and where three more children were born: Kathy, Craig, and Ted. Scoop passed away on Father's Day, June 18, 1978, and Ruby continued working and raising Teddy.
She spent many working years in the most elite Casper hotels, especially the Henning Hotel Elbow Room, where she met and made friends with Casper's most elite. She retired from hostessing at the Goose Egg Inn and Benham’s Supper Club. Ruby was instrumental in creating Wardwell Water & Sewer District to help the community receive fresh water service. She served as the Board president for many years.
No one was ever a stranger at Granny's table. She was "Granny" to many neighborhood kids, friends of her children and grandchildren, young and old alike. She enjoyed cooking for her family and many others. Ruby was not scared of hard work and she expected the same from everyone else. Ruby raised and butchered chickens, sometimes up to 100 chickens a day. She enjoyed her yardwork, her flowers, gardening and canning. Ruby would cut a rug with the best of them. She always had time for coffee with her good friend and neighbor Esther. Due to failing health, she had to give up many favorite things, and she moved to Shepherd of the Valley in the spring of 2012, where she would spend the rest of her days, passing peacefully on August 26, 2020.
She was preceded in death by her parents; five brothers; her beloved husband of 39 years; daughters Janette, Shirley, and Carol; and is survived by Ada Kay Renick (Bob), Kathy J. Halverson (Patrick); sons Craig J. Skogen (Patty) and Ted D. Skogen (Roxy); 17 grandchildren; 29 great grandchildren; and 6 great, great grandchildren.
