Roy was born August 26, 1928 on a farm in Minatare, Scottsbluff County, Nebraska. His parents were Art and Susan (Towne) Holten. Roy was the second son in a family of five children. He attended school in Minatare and Scottsbluff, graduating from 8th grade. In 1945 the Holten family moved west. They settled in the Ojai Valley (Ventura County), California. They remained in Oak View 45 years, During his working career, Roy enjoyed working at Taylor Ranch, Ventura; was a school custodian in Ojai, Calif. and Rocklite Products in Ventura. Sadly, while working for Rocklite, he was badly injured in an industrial accident that caused severe burns, loss of his right arm and six months in the hospital. While in the hospital, he received a draft notice for the Korean War - he was 20 years old. In 1968, Roy moved with his sister and her family to Cottage Grove, Oregon. He went to meat cutting school there, remaining on as an employee for over two years. After leaving there, he and his sister opened Roy's Farm and Family Supply in Criswell, Oregon. It was a western store/Purina Feeds franchise. The store was sold in 1980 and Roy returned to Oak View to live with his elderly parents. In 1998, following the deaths of both parents (1993 and 1998), he again moved to his sister's home - this time in Glenrock, Wyoming, It was a small quarter horse ranch and Roy was the ranch foreman until ill health forced him into a nursing home in Casper. Roy passed away suddenly and peacefully early Sunday morning, July 8, 2012 at Poplar Living Center. He is survived by his brother, Jon Holten (LaWana), sister, Harriett Holten Roe, six nieces and nephews, cousins, Aunt Mary Holten and too many friends to try to count. He never met a stranger and he was loved by all who were lucky enough to know him. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Arthur, Jr. and Richard "Dickey"; both passed away in childhood. Also his grandparents, Chris and Olga Holten, Grandmother, Ada Towne Thayer, several beloved aunts, uncles and cousins, and brother-in-law Archer "JR" Roe in 2006. So long precious brother and friend, you will be sorely missed BUT NEVER FORGOTTEN. RIP Graveside services for Roy will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, July 14, 2012, at Fairview Cemetery, Scottsbluff, Nebraska. Memorial contributions to Hospice House would be appreciated by the family.
