Roy Herrington

At 80 years old, Roy L. Herrington passed away after a long battle with diabetes and cancer at Central Wyoming Hospice of Casper on June 21, 2011. He was born February 5, 1931 to Edgar and Lela (Davis) Herrington in Atkinson, Nebraska. He grew up on ranches in Holt and Rock County, Nebraska. He met Lotus King while roller skating and later married her in 1951 in Bassett, Nebraska. In 1952 he served in the US Army and received an honorable discharge in 1954. As a Private First Class, he received the Korean Service Medal with 3 Bronze Stars, the National Defense Service Medal, the Combat Infantry Badge, and a Purple Heart. After his honorable discharge, he served in the Nebraska Army Reserves for 8 years. Roy spent his life as a heavy equipment operator in various states; he worked through the operating engineers Local of Casper and retired in 1993. After his retirement, Lotus and Roy enjoyed traveling in their motor home, as well as, weekends spent boating and fishing. He was passionate about fishing. Roy was the Commander of the Pathfinder Boat Club and a member of the North Platte Walleye Unlimited. He was an avid bowler and a Golden Eagle member at the Eagle's Lodge 306. Roy was also a lifetime member of the Elks Lodge #1353, and the VFW Post #9439. He was always one of the first volunteers to sell tickets, cook, or do whatever was needed. Though Roy and Lotus never had children of their own, Roy was a father and cherished uncle to many. Roy is survived by his wife, Lotus, of Mills; brother Ray (Wanda) Herrington, of Bassett, NE; Dorothy (the late Frank) Nachtman, sister Donna (Dewayne)Tasler of Atkinson, NE; many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, extended family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents Edgar and Lela Herrington. A memorial service will be held at the Oregon Trail Veteran's Cemetery in Evansville, WY at 10:30 AM on Monday, June 27, 2011. A celebration of life will be held at the Mills Hall immediately following the services. Memorials to the Central Wyoming Hospice of Casper or the Eagles Children's Memorial Heart Fund would be appreciated.
