Robert Wellborn

Robert Edward Wellborn Jr., age 88, passed peacefully in his home with family by his side on January 19, 2018. Robert was born to Robert E. Wellborn, Sr. and Marguerite Elizabeth (Morris) Wellborn on January 15, 1930, in Iola, Kansas. He moved with his family to Wichita in 1943 where both of his parents worked in the aircraft plants during the war. Bob stayed busy with Boy Scouts, paper and scrap metal drives, and school. He was an avid swimmer and diver, winning the Kansas state high school diving championship. After high school he attended Wichita University, then Kansas University where he graduated with honors in Geological Engineering, receiving the Haworth Award in Geology. While at K.U. he was on the swimming and diving team, and also won the Southwest AAU diving championship in Wichita. Following graduation he went to work for The California Company (now Chevron) in Shreveport, LA. A few months later he was drafted into the army during the Korean War, where he served as an instructor in the Petroleum Products Analysis section. After an honorable discharge he attended graduate school at Berkeley, and there after was sent by Chevron to Grand Junction, Colorado. There he met his wife to be, Jody, (JoReva Beane), and they were married October 14, 1956. Robert continued to work as a geologist for Chevron, Burton & Hawks and Wold Oil & Gas. He was a member of the Wyoming Geological Association for 53 years. He was also a member of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists and published many articles on his perspectives as well as various geological prospects. The mountains were etched in his heart. He so enjoyed backpacking, skiing, golf and the great outdoors, especially sharing these activities with his family. He also had a love for travel. Robert and his beloved JoReva spent many years traveling the globe exploring different cultures and taking on new adventures. We have lived a love story, the story continues. Robert is survived by his soul mate and true love JoReva of 61 years, his sons Kris & Eric, (and late son Lance who passed November 20, 2017); grandchildren: Aspen, Mason, Trevor and Tristen, and daughter-in-law Amber. Celebration of Bob's life to be scheduled at a later date. In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate memorials be made to a charity of your choice in Bob's name.
