Robert Eugene "Gene" Hudson, 91, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on March 16, 2017. Gene was born on March 19, 1925 in Lake Wales, FL, the son of Robert Hudson, Lucille Hudson, and stepmother, Helen Hudson. Gene joined the United States Army in 1943 and fought bravely in the South Pacific. On December 9, 1944, his company arrived at the Lingayen Gulf for the Luzon Invasion where he earned a Purple Heart. In 1945 he was one of ten men chosen from thousands of soldiers to be in General Douglas MacArthur's prestigious first Honor Guard. After Gene's honorable discharge, he fulfilled a childhood dream of becoming a geological engineer, earning a master's degree from the Colorado School of Mines. Gene had a particular passion for oil exploration in the Minnelusa formation, and as an independent geologist, he discovered numerous successful oil fields. While attending college, he met his beloved wife, Janice Whitaker of Douglas, WY, and they wed on June 13, 1949. Gene and Jan shared 67 wonderful years together, raising four children. He loved being a father and cherished his many adventures with his family in and out of the U.S. Gene was an active and longtime member of the Wyoming Geological Association, the Casper Petroleum Club, the Casper Country Club, and St. Stephen's Episcopal Church. We are very thankful for the support of so many who made it possible for Gene to enjoy his life at home with Jan and family. Gene was a kind man who has left us with memories and stories full of his love, wisdom, and humor. Funeral Service will be held on July 7, 2017 at 2:00 P.M. at the Oregon Trail State Veterans Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in his honor may be made to Central Wyoming Hospice.
