Norris Nelson

Mr. Norris L. Nelson, 87, of Casper, passed away September 11, 2015 in Casper. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am, on Thursday, September 17, 2015 at Our Saviours Lutheran Church with Pastor Bob McNamara officiating. Visitation will be held today, Wednesday, September 16 from 5-7 pm at Bustard's Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Memorial Gardens Cemetery with military honors being conducted by the Army National Guard and Wyoming State Veterans Council. Norris was born December 19, 1927 in Sweetwater, Nebraska to Olaf Christian and Agnes Pauline Nelson. After spending his childhood in Shoshoni, the family moved to Casper in 1941. He graduated from Natrona County High School in 1945 then went on to serve in the United States Army during World War II. On August 10, 1951, he married Margrete "Darlene" Peterson at Our Saviours Lutheran Church in Casper. The couple went on to raise a son, Rick Nelson and daughter Laurie Nelson. Norris spent his career as a mail carrier in Casper and even owned all of the mail trucks in Casper between 1953 and 1972. Norris was a lifelong, very active member of Our Saviours Lutheran Church. He helped with the set up of many of the children's musical programs and every Monday morning was at the church helping with the financial affairs. He was a major part of the church's property board. No one knew more about the church building than Norris and he was the go to guy when it came to it. He was a fixture as an usher for many years and also helped operate the sound system. He truly was a pillar of the church. Norris also enjoyed stock car racing, NASCAR, and having coffee with friends. Norris is survived by wife, Darlene; son, Rick Nelson; daughter, Laurie Nelson, of Casper, Wyoming; brother, Harvey (Marie)Nelson, of Wilmar, Minnesota; brother-in-law, Dick Gilbert of Casper, Wyoming along with numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Palma Gilbert and niece Patti Gail Gilbert. Memorial contributions to honor Norris' memory may be made to Our Saviours Lutheran Church.
