Nellie Duncan, 102 years old, passed away in Casper at Central Wyoming Hospice on October 29, 2023. She was surrounded by her loving family.
Nellie was born in Baggs, WY, to James Wilson and Edith Humphrey on February 8, 1921. She was the 5th of 10 children.
She graduated from Rawlins High School in 1939. On May 28, 1939 she married Lloyd Alfred “Al” Duncan. Nellie and Al had three children, Lloyd, Lavaughn and Jamie. They lived and worked in Cheyenne, Wamsutter and Rawlins until 1956 when they moved their family to Richland, Oregon where they remained until their children were grown.
Nellie owned and operated several cafes where she earned a reputation as an awesome cook and manager. She cooked for many years at the Richland School cafeteria.
During her time in Oregon, she was an active member of the Rebekah and Eastern Star Organizations.
After their children were grown, Nellie and Al moved on to new adventures in Anchorage, Alaska, working and spending time with numerous family members, before moving back to Casper to be closer to their children and grandchildren. Nellie worked as a bookkeeper, in Casper for Karst Enterprises until she retired.
Her love for Wyoming included hunting specifically “antelope” with her trusty little 30-30 and fishing the creeks for “Brookies”.
Nellie was a talented seamstress, artist and craftsperson. She was what we should all strive to be – strong, independent, humble, honest, hardworking and compassionate.
She loved Jesus, her country and her family fiercely and met every challenge head-on with bravery and a wry sense of humor. Nellie was a shining example for her family and friends.
Nellie is survived by her daughter, Lavaughn (Butch) Bowman; 8 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, 17 great-great grandchildren; sisters, Pegge Thompson and Gail Evans; daughter-in-law, Barb Duncan, son-in-law David Sours; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
