On September 23, 2014, Michael Ray Mahaffey, our beloved father, husband, and brother joined the angels after a valiant fight with cancer. He was born on December 17, 1955 to Mack M. and Irene F. Mahaffey in Williston, North Dakota. He was the youngest of three children. He spent most of his formative years in Greenwood, Arkansas; until the eighth grade, when his family moved to Riverton, WY. He joined the U. S. Navy after receiving his GED during his junior year at Riverton High School. He was stationed on the USS Independence, and spent much of his time in the waters off of Italy. After his tour of duty, he returned to Riverton and started working as a rig hand in the oil field. He met Cressie Casteel and they were married on November 14, 1977. During his life he was employed by Gulf Oil, Halliburton Service and Baker Service Tool. He also owned and operated his own trucking business and he worked for BTI Inc. out of Riverton. Later in life, he was an instructor for Sage Truck Driving School in Casper WY, allowing him to use his vast knowledge and skill to train the next generation. Mike's service to his country continued throughout his life. He was in the Army National Guard for 8 years with the Riverton and Casper units. He also enjoyed helping other veterans and their families through the American Legion Post #2 in Casper, where he was Vice Post Commander for several years and a member of the Honor Guard. He loved fishing, camping, playing cards, spending his time off with family and was a fabulous cook. One of his specialties was hosting breakfast for his extended family and friends on his outdoor patio. He is survived by his wife Cressie, his three girls - Keri Homan, Kasey Hilyard, Kathi Adams, three son-in-Iaws, six grandchildren, mother-in-law - Shirley Baker, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. A celebration of his life will be held Friday, October 3, 2014; 1:00 PM at Christ United Methodist Church in Casper. Military honors will be accorded by the Natrona County United Veterans Council and the United States Navy Honor Guard, at Oregon Trail Veterans Cemetery. A reception will follow at the Black Gold Grille. In lieu of flowers, we ask that donations be made in his honor to Central Wyoming Hospice and Transition and the American Legion Post 2.
