MaryElla Ackerly

MaryElla Ackerly was born MaryElla Mason Smith on March 9, 1927 in Charlotte, NC. MaryElla lived most of her years in Atlanta, GA where she attended Girl's High. In August 1947 she married Dr. Ernest Ackerly and they raised their 3 children, Paul, Alan and MaryNell, together until his drowning in March 1963. MaryElla worked as a contact lens technician then entertained children in public libraries reading them stories. MaryElla loved being on the water-Ack's Shack on the lake at Garmon Road, "The Nellie", her houseboat on Lake Lanier or her beach house in Destin, FL. She loved planning and cooking elaborate meals for holidays or any gatherings she could surround herself with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, her brothers, sister, nieces, nephews and her collection of many, many friends. Preceding her in death were her parents, Mr. & Mrs. Ed Smith, her husband, Dr. Ernest Ackerly, and her sister, Jean Holman. MaryElla is survived by her children Paul & Linda Ackerly, Alan & Katherine Ackerly and MaryNell Ackerly; brothers ,Ed Smith, Jr. and Bill Smith; her grandchildren, Ernest Ackerly, Mary Alicen Cowan, Elaine Ackerly, Tullie Ackerly Ramirez, Alan Ackerly Jr., Elyse Ackerly, Hannah Ackerly, 11 great-grandchildren and special loved ones Joni Andrew Cross, Helen ‘Hey Lady' Hirsh, John Craword, Tim Muckerheide and many, many more-
