Mark A. Benton, 63, passed away on October 11, 2014 due to complications associated with an aggressive form of dementia. Mark was born in Casper, WY on November 2, 1950 to Ralph and Adelaide Benton. He graduated from Kelly Walsh High School in 1969. He married his high school sweetheart and one true love Kathleen Edwards on July 7, 1970. Their biggest joy was the birth of their two children, Neil and Candice. Mark joined the US Army and served his country in Vietnam as a military policeman. He was awarded the Bronze Star for his service. Shortly after returning to Wyoming, he started his career at the Natrona County Sheriff's Office. He spent 40 years with the Sheriff's department culminating his career in 1999 when he was elected for the first of four terms as Natrona County Sheriff. He retired in June 2013 to focus on his health and family. In 2006 Mark became a grandfather for the first time and then again in 2008. Those "little sweeties" had him wrapped around their fingers. He would have been such a great part of their lives. We envision him at the gates of heaven greeting everyone by name. Mark loved people and had a gift to remember everyone's name, who they were married to, how many kids they had, their job and who their parents where. He made it a priority to personally know and appreciate each of his employees. As a leader of a large department you could hear him repeatedly offer assistance with the phrase, "Is there anything I can do for you?" His true passions were telling stories, helping people, and his career in law enforcement. He had a great sense of humor and loyalty . He was a history buff and loved his country. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and a treasured brother. There are no words to express how deeply he will be missed. Mark leaves behind his wife of 44 years, Kathy, his children Neil (Samantha) Benton, Candice (James) Cochran, two granddaughters Marissa and Madison, two sisters Anita (George) Rummel, Karen Benton, one brother Ralph (Barbara) Benton, numerous nieces and one nephew. Donations can be made in his honor to Wyoming Dementia Care, P.O. Box 1493, Casper, WY 82602. A service will be held Saturday, October 18 at 10:00am at St. Patrick's Catholic Church.
