Margaret Haines

April 8, 1921 — June 20, 2014

Margaret (Whiteaway-Springsteen) Haines 93 passed away June 20th, 2014, at Central Wyoming Hospice, with her family at her side. Margaret was born April 8, 1921 in Riverton, WY. She was the only child to Henry and Amy (Manning) Whiteaway. Her parents homesteaded from Devonshire, England. They made their home, on the land south of Waltman, WY. Margaret's dad was a Sheep rancher and she was raised in a Sheep wagon. Margaret grew up sharing her Father's passion for the family sheep ranch. Working beside him caring for the sheep, her horses and the animals. She spent time riding horses with her two friends Jane Ann (Van Patten) Springsteen and Ellen (Miller) Springsteen. She attended school at Waltman and graduated from NCHS in Casper. She attended the Paris, TX University, graduating with a degree in Teletype. In 1942, she went to work for Mountain Bell telephone company, where she worked as a night Chief Operator. Margaret married Gordon Springsteen in 1943. He was transferred to Germany and Holland. He was killed in WorId War II and laid to rest in Holland. In 1947 Margaret found the love of her life at Moneta, WY. Dave W. Haines. She and her girl friend Alice Roberts were on a motorcycle with a sidecar headed to Yellowstone. They married in May 3, 1948. In the Winter of 1949 their son Roy was born. When Dave returned home from WorId War II, Margaret and Dave started a business, called Wyoming Used Furniture Company, on east 2nd in Casper. Dave was recalled to the Korean Conflict and Margaret continued to run the business with her son and the help of her parents. In 1952 Margaret gave birth to Sue Ellen and 1954 another daughter Renae. They moved the family to the Westside of Casper, where the kids could have animals and open space to grow. Margaret's father, Henry Whiteaway and Mr. Springsteen started the American Legion Post Unit #16, Big Horn Mountain. It was started in Waltman and later moved to Powder River, WY.and renamed after Margaret's Father. Margaret and Dave were very active in the American Legion and Auxiliary. She was a 79 year member of the American legion Auxiliary. Serving as the Dept. President, National Defense Chairman, Past Chapeau of 8&40. Serving all offices in her own Unit and District #3. Auxiliary Junior leader, 12 year member of the American Legion Aux. Girls State and Girl State Director. She was active in the Natrona County Cowbell's. Women of the Moose, Eagle's and Izaak Walton League. Margaret's love for young people went further than her own home, where the door was always open to kids of all ages. She was active in 4- H as a leader and with her own children's projects. Brownies, Girls Scouts and Cub Scouts and Rodeo. She enjoyed her dogs, gardening, crocheting, canning and writing in her diary, stories about the family. Margaret's greatest love and passion was the time spent with her family and friends. She was never too busy to put on a pot of tea or deliver a hot bowI of soup to someone in need. Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Amy Whiteaway, her first husband Gordon Springsteen, her loving and devoted Husband Dave W. Haines, and her son-in-law Lynn Frost. Margaret is survived by her three children: Roy W. Haines (Susan). Daughter's: Sue Ellen (Haines-Frost) Zigliotto, Renae (Haines-Jeffries) Thomas (Gary) and Linda (Robinett) Haines. Grand Children: Sara Haines, Sherry Stuart (Travis), Mario & Christina Zigliotto, Cortney Eye and Amy Jeffries (Tyler). Robbie and Mary Mrdutt. Great grand Children: Caitlyn Eye, Tyler and Sawyer Stuart. Bernard, Lunna and Little Buster. Her devoted nieces and nephews and special friends. Margaret loved the wide-open spaces of Wyoming. The calm and quiet of herding sheep or listening to the birds on an early Spring morning. "Just being one with God-And now she is"!! In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Margaret's name to The American Legion Auxiliary Emergency Fund and Central Wyoming Hospice.
