Lyle A. Crosby

August 9, 1938 — March 20, 2025

Casper, WY

Lyle A. Crosby was the second son of nine children born to Ralph and Hazel (Fish) Crosby. He was born at home in Platte, SD on August 9th, 1938 and passed away at the age of 86 following a prolonged struggle with cancer on March 20, 2025. Lyle was cared for at Central Wyoming Hospice and Transitions in Casper, Wyoming at the time of his passing. Per Lyle’s direction, Memorial services will be held at Bustard & Jacoby Funeral chapel in Casper, Wyoming on March 31, at 11:00 am with visitation 1 hour before the service. Interment will be at Green Mountain Cemetery in Sundance, Wyoming.

Lyle attended elementary schools in rural Platte, SD, Castalia and Forbes #5 schools. He graduated from Platte High School in 1957. Lyle was active in FFA while in high school and was FFA president at one point. Following high school Lyle enlisted in the National Guard at Platte—the 137th engineering unit.

Lyle left Platte, SD in pursuit of opportunities in the West to work as a ranch hand. He worked on ranches in Colorado, Montana and Wyoming. Lyle enjoyed all things associated with Western life, horses, breaking horses to ride, rodeos, ranch work, boots and cowboy hats. He loved the outdoors! Lyle met Lois Joy Morris in Sundance, Wyoming and they were married on February 8th 1963. They spent their married life in Sundance and later divorced.

A position with the State Department of Agriculture took Lyle to Cheyenne, Wyoming. While working in Cheyenne, he was honored to serve as Chairman of Frontier Days in 1986. Lyle left Cheyenne to accept a federal position with the Department of Agriculture in Casper, Wyoming where he served as Assistant State Director of APHIS (Animal Plant Health Inspection Service). Among other tasks, he was in charge of Predator Management.

Lyle strongly supported the Second Amendment! He was a hunter from an early age; pheasants, deer, antelope, elk and bighorn sheep. He will be remembered for all the adventures he shared and the details of the stories he told. He took his jobs seriously and expected others to do so too. He did creative leather work and leather braiding along with saddle repair. He made beautiful belts, wallets, gun cases, and purses. He could repair nearly anything leather. Lyle will be missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by his brother, Wayne (Anita) Crosby Platte, SD; Sisters, Lois Crosby Smook (Ron) North Mankato, MN; Glenda Crosby Nielsen (Ross); and Willy Crosby Rolston (Dave) Missoula, MT; Sister-in-Law, Sharon Crosby (Dale) Weeping Water, NE; former Sister-in-Law Rhonda Kauffmann Florence, MT as well as a Host of nieces, nephews, cousins and a multitude of friends.
