Lily May was born September 5, 1917 in Randon, Texas to Gaites Holman and Annie Francis Mikeska Jenkins. She often told of spending her early childhood living in a railroad car with her parents. Her father Gaites, ran a team of mules and oversaw his workmen as they laid railroad tracks across south Texas. Her family made their home in Orchard, Texas where Lily attended the local school. She began playing the piano in the first grade and soon was playing for the community church each Sunday. It was at this small country church that she first met her Lord. It was also here that the Jenkins family and the Bevers family met and became friends. This large family of 9 helped fill the small church. After graduating from Richmond High School, she attended Drons Business School graduating with a Business Degree, and returned to her home in Orchard. In that small church in Orchard, many years before, she met Virgle Walter Bevers, now they fell in love. They were married November 5, 1937 in Lake Charles, Louisiana. Virgle and Lily moved to "the valley" in Texas as he worked in the oilfield. 1940 found them living in Houston, with Virgle working for Gulf Oil Company. It was here that their daughter Nancy Ann was born. Two years later Lily May took her daughter and moved to Venezuela where Virgle had been transferred. The family lived there for the next three years. Upon returning to the states, the small family moved back to Houston to be close to their extended family. In 1949 they moved into their new home, one Lily May had designed and contracted the building of. Lily May was an active member at Lindale Baptist Church in Houston. She taught children's Sunday school, led Bible study groups, sang in the choir, and when needed played the piano for the services. In 1954, she began keeping books part-time for a local lumberyard. 1956 found her working full time as secretary for the Houston Independent School District. Lily May continued to live in and maintain the family home, until Nancy had started college. All during this time Virlie continued being on the road working the oilfields. It was the next year in 1962 that Lily went with Virgle as he was transferred first to Alice, Texas and then in 1966 to Casper, Wyoming. Lily May was an avid learner and returned to school. She enrolled at Casper College graduating in 1970 with as Associate of Business Degree. From 1971 - 1974, Lily May worked for Memorial Hospital of Natrona Co., 1974 - 1982 Bustard Funeral Home. She stopped working at Bustard's and stayed home in order to care of her husband who had had a massive stroke. After his passing in 1983 (they were married 46 yrs.). She returned to the work force. 1985 found her working for the Wyoming Employment Security Commission (WESC), later transferring to the newly formed WESC Credit Union (Greater Wyoming Federal Credit Union). In 1988, she returned to school at UW/CC graduating in 1991 with her Bachelor of Science Degree (She was the oldest graduating student at this time.) After graduation, she returned to the WESC Credit Union part time, retiring in 1993. Beta Sigma Phi became another facet of her life in 1990. Here she enlarged her circle of friends and prayer partners. Lily May's life revolved around her love for her Lord, His work, and her family. She and her family became active members (within two weeks of moving to Casper) of Boyd Avenue Baptist Church. Lily May enjoyed singing in the choir and playing the piano when needed. Studying her Lord's Word and being a prayer warrior were always a large part of her life and she had many prayer partners throughout the years.
