On April 23, 2016, surrounded by his family, lifelong Casper resident, Leonard Emery Lang, passed away peacefully following a series of strokes and dementia. He was born in Casper on June 17, 1925, to Leonard and Mary Agnes (McDowell) Lang. He attended Roosevelt and Lincoln Elementary Schools and graduated from Natrona County High School in 1942, at which time he enlisted in the United States Navy where he was a radioman, 1st class, during World War II. He was honorably discharged on November 1, 1945, and returned to Casper where he met his future wife, Dorothy "Dottie" DeWees. They were married January 15, 1946. Taking advantage of the G.I Bill, the next fall he began pursuing an accounting degree at the recently created Casper Junior College. After graduation, he began working at Socony Vacuum Oil Company and briefly at Standard Oil. One of the joys of his life was playing softball and baseball in his spare time and his love of playing these sports resulted in one of his coaches, attorney Raymond Whitaker, encouraging him to go to law school. Leonard and his wife and their three children at that time moved to Laramie where he attained his law degree. The family returned to Casper following graduation where he had a successful law practice and was involved in many civic organizations. Leonard was President of the Casper Mountain Lions Club, President of the local Bar Association, an Elder at Winter Memorial Presbyterian Church, and later served as a Vestry member at St. Mark's Episcopal Church. He was also a board member of the Casper Country Club. Leonard and Dottie enjoyed playing bridge, golf, dancing, and the company of the many friends they developed over the years. They were 50-year members of the Casper Country Club and Viva La Joie. They celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary this past January. The couple, along with their four children, were all born in Casper. Their children are Cheryl "Cherie" (Bob) Phillips and Rick (Pam) Lang of Casper; Judy (Bob) Kimble, of Las Vegas, Nevada; and John Lang (Tamma Harris) of Oregon City, Oregon. In addition, they have many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Leonard was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Eula Lang Miller. The family is very appreciative of the care he received at Meadow Wind Memory Care and Central Wyoming Hospice Program at the end of his life. A celebration of life will be held at the Oregon Trail State Veterans Cemetery in Evansville on Monday, May 2, at 2:00 p.m. officiated by his nephew, Rev Al Hazen. Memorial contributions in his honor may be made to Central Wyoming Hospice, 319 S Wilson St, Casper, WY 82601, Casper Humane Society, 849 East E Street, Casper, WY 82601, or the cause nearest to your heart.
