Lawrence (Larry) Paul Mayer died in Casper, WY and was promoted to Heaven on July 6, 2014. He died from non-smoker's lung cancer after an 18 month long battle. Services will be held on Friday, July 11, 2014 at Highland Park Community Church at 11 AM. Larry was born in Pittsburgh, PA to Joan (McGrath) Mayer and Thomas Mayer on June 23, 1955. Larry graduated from North Hills High School in 1973, and continued his education at American University in Washington D.C. from 1973-1977, where he received a B.S. in Criminal Justice. As a senior in college, he was an intern at the U.S. Federal Probation Office in the U.S. District Courthouse in Washington D.C. The summer after college, Larry saved enough money to take a backpack tour of Europe. In the fall of 1977, Larry spent three weeks in Britain and Scotland, and the following three weeks riding the rails of mainland Europe on a Eurail Pass. It was a great way to combine his love of trains with his love of travel and adventure. Larry returned to Pittsburgh and started his career in retail. He moved from Pittsburgh to Memphis, TN and Houston, TX before finding his way to Ft. Worth, TX. Not long after arriving in Ft. Worth, Larry met his one true love, Janet. They were married, and both of their daughters, Samantha and Molly, were born in Texas. Larry began working for Sam's Club as a manager, which moved the family to St. Charles, MO and then the opportunity arose for Larry to open a new store in Casper, WY in 1993. Larry went on to open and be the general manager of Office Max and Staples. While he was at Office Max, Larry and Janet were blessed to add a son, Bennett, to the family. He felt led to accept the position as the general manager of Big Lots, where he was working when he was diagnosed with cancer. Larry was well-known and loved in the community, had a great work ethic, and always put the needs of his family before himself. He had a kind heart, a quick wit, and an infectious smile, which continued into his final days. Larry is survived by his wife, Janet of Casper, daughters, Samantha (Ryan) Thompson and Molly, son, Bennett and grandson, Bridger Thompson, mother-in-law, Barbara Hooper, and brothers, Thomas Mayer of San Francisco, CA, and Daniel Mayer of Pittsburgh, PA, as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and many friends who were like family. Larry was preceded in death by his mother, Joan Cairns and his father, Thomas Mayer. Larry prepared this obituary in the months preceding his death, and would like to remind you that "just because I died, doesn't mean your prayers weren't answered." Larry, as well as the family, would like to thank everyone for their continued prayers and support during this time. In lieu of flowers, donations, or contributions, Larry has requested that you please take care of his family.
