Larry Ruben Stroh passed from this world on June 11, 2024, at Wyoming Medical Center from cardiac arrest. He came into this world November 18, 1942, to parents Reuben Jake Stroh and Esther Edna “Ley” Stroh in Greeley, CO.
He lived in the Greeley farming area until 1949 when the family moved to Powell, WY to resume farming. He graduated from Powell High School in 1960. After graduating he headed into the world to forge his own path.
Larry was a member of the Powell National Guard and in 1960 was activated because of the Berlin Crisis along with his brothers Lloyd and Jerry. They were ready to be shipped out when the crisis was averted.
He ultimately joined Local 193 Plumbers, Pipefitters, and Welders and was a lifelong member for 59 years. There were many facets of his time in the union as a five-year apprentice, from big construction with refineries, power houses, to coal mines, etc. Then there were two restless years as Apprenticeship coordinator. He received his Master’s Plumbing license in 1978 and began his own plumbing, heating and lawn sprinkler business, LaMar Inc., which he operated with Marcia for 22 years. Larry believed that if you do the job the right way the first time you have acquired a customer forever. It proved to be right as most of his customers became valued friends. In 2000, he joined the mechanical staff at Wyoming Medical Center and shortly after, became their Master Plumber of record. He worked at the hospital until retiring and was so proud of the “big house” that he took care of.
Larry met Marcia Jean “Ledford” in Lusk, WY in 1964. They were married April 23, 1966, and brought into the world Marty Joe in 1966 and Tamar Renee in 1976. Larry loved his family and never failed to attend any activity that they were involved in. Marty joined the “Casper Troopers” when he was 12 and was in the drumline for 7 years. During that time Larry was an active member of TPI (Troopers Parent Initiative), driving the Sheep Wagon to events to sell souvenirs. Marty and his dad built the first shoulder harnesses for the drum section. Larry and Marcia have been avid fans of the Troopers to this day.
Tamar participated in an array of activities like soccer, volleyball, cheerleader, played in the school band as well as marching band, and danced with never a time that her dad wasn’t there to cheer her on. She also received great coaching on Larry’s hard work ethic as she installed and mended sprinkler systems over the summers with him.
Larry was a life member of the Casper Elks Lodge among other fraternities that he joined, but his passion was for the Elks as their charities are for children and veterans. After retirement he began to help the lodge take care of their “big house”, doing anything he could. He was also a proud trustee member of the lodge and was responsible for running the Funday Monday/Queen of Hearts for 10 years.
Larry’s main passion was guns. He shot many silhouette matches with his brother Jerry, nephew Jerrod, Marty and Tamar with all of them winning many matches throughout Wyoming. He loved shooting Cowboy Action, with various competition scenarios, guns and clothing of the period. Larry and Marcia traveled to New Mexico and throughout Wyoming joining in the SASS Cowboy Shoots. In his later years you could find him quite often in the gun stores drooling over some gun. It was a joke in the family that he could wear you out if you went gun shopping with him! He was very knowledgeable and sought out by many people with questions and socialized often on that subject.
The outdoors was Larry’s heaven on earth. He loved to hunt, fish, camp, snowmobile, ski, garden and so much more. Above all he was a patriot. He attended all veteran memorial services and flew his flag every day possible. Larry was a member of the Honor Guard through the veteran services for several years. He loved honoring our veterans.
Larry is survived by his wife Marcia, his son Marty (DeeDee), his daughter Tamar (Casey) Keefe. Four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Brothers Lloyd (Nomi) Stroh and Rick (Klodette) Stroh and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents Reuben & Esther Stroh, his brother Gerald and sisters, Janet (Stroh) Jones and Linda (Stroh) Johnson.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations be sent to the Casper Elks Lodge 1353 at 108 East 7th St., Casper, WY 82601, or the Troopers, 1801 East E St., Casper, WY 82601 (Troopersdrumcorps.org/donate).
Cremation has taken place and services will be held at the Oregon Trail Cemetery with Military Honors on Tuesday, June 25th at 1:30 p.m.
We ask that you join us at the Casper Elks Lodge, Ball Room directly after the service to continue sharing remembrances of Larry’s life.
