Joyce Bryan

February 1, 1934 — May 18, 2020

Joyce Lee Bryan was born on February 1, 1934 in New Rochelle, New York, to the parents of James L. and Marion Darnell. She was the youngest of three girls and spent a majority of her life growing up in the South. As a teenager, Joyce attended Amarillo High School in Amarillo, Texas. Some of her passions included synchronized and competitive swimming. After graduating high school, Joyce attended the University of Florida before moving to Casper, Wyoming – where her father was stationed with the US Navy. There in Casper is where Joyce met Hugh Bryan, whom she would go on to marry on November 28, 1953.
The couple had five children together, filling their home with laughter and adventure. Joyce was a nurturing mother who went above and beyond to be there for her children and their friends. She quickly became the master of organized chaos while raising all five children. Later, once all the children left the home, Joyce went on to acquire a degree in Sociology from the University of Wyoming at the age of 50. Following her degree, he helped start Interfaith, an emergency assistance service that provided help for families at or below the poverty line.
Joyce was passionate about gardening, reading, and interior design. It was typical for her family to see her sitting in her favorite armchair with a crossword puzzle in hand. Joyce was a social butterfly among the Casper community, spending her free time at book club meetings or luncheon with friends. The family home was often filled with children, grandchildren, puppies, and a bird named Casper, keeping Joyce busy.
She and her husband, Hugh, were married for nearly 67 years before his passing on March 27, 2020. Not willing to be without the love of her life for long, Joyce shortly followed Hugh 52 days later.
She is survived by her children Charlotte Bryan of Centennial, Colorado; Hugh Bryan of Cheyenne, Wyoming; Suzanne and Calvin Zoellner of Centennial, Colorado; and Gary Bryan of Casper, Wyoming. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren and five great grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
