John Robert Popish, 84 died November 9, 2013 at Garden Square Assisted Living Facility in Casper, Wyoming. He was born November 22, 1928 to Frank and Mary Popish in Denver, Colorado. The family moved to Portland, Oregon where John graduated from high school in 1946. He returned to Ft. Collins, Colorado later that year to attend Colorado A & M University (now CSU) obtaining his BS degree in Animal Nutrition in 1950. It was during this time he met & married his college sweetheart, Virginia H. Durham on August 26, 1950. They celebrated 62 years of marriage before her death in September 2012. John served as 1st Lieutenant and Courier Officer in the United States Air Force on the Island of Okinawa, Japan during the Korean War conflict. He later returned to Ft. Collins to attend Colorado State Veterinary College graduating in 1957. In 1958 the family moved to Casper, Wyoming and established the Popish Veterinary Clinic where he practiced veterinary medicine for 35 years. He retired in the fall of 1992. John served as president of the Wyoming Veterinary Medical Association and was a delegate to the American Veterinary Medical Association for eight years. He was also a member of the Wyoming Board of Veterinary Examiners for four years. Locally he served on the Natrona County Health Board, Casper Chamber of Commerce, Casper City Council and was a member and President of the Casper Kiwanis Club. John also was active in Little League baseball for many years. He & Virginia were members of St. Marks Episcopal Church. John was preceded in death by his wife Virginia, his parents, and brother Frank. He is survived by his sister Mary of Idaho, brother Philip of Colorado, four children, Dale Popish of Casper, Lynne (Jerry) Brown of Richardson, Texas, Susan Sullivan of Laramie, and Steven (Beth) Popish of Boise, Idaho. Also surviving are twelve grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Bustard's Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 pm on Friday, November 15, 2013 @ St. Mark's Episcopal Church with Father Phillip Major officiating. Military honors will be accorded by the Natrona County United Veterans Council and the Wyoming Army National Guard. A reception will be held in the St. Mark's Parish Hall immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Casper. The Popish family would like to extend special thanks to the all of the caregivers of Garden Square Assisted Living and Central Wyoming Hospice and Transitions for the loving & compassionate care they extended to John.
