Jay J. Smith passed away on February 19, 2017 of causes incident to age. Jay was born January 14, 1930 in Casper, Wyoming to J. Russell and Katherine Bates Smith. Jay was a lifelong resident of Casper. He attended Natrona County High School and graduated from the University of Wyoming, where he won scholastic honors in pharmacy. Jay excelled in shooting sports throughout his life. He was part of the NCHS Rifle Team, winning the Grand National Championships in Booneville, MO in 1948. Jay was also named to the All American College Rifle Team in 1950, and set a national record in the 4 position metallic sight event. He served in the Army in the Korean War as a forward observer and a medic. Jay had a long career as a pharmacist in Casper. He was chief pharmacist at Natrona County Memorial Hospital, and later a teaching pharmacist at Wyoming Family Practice Medical Center. Jay's life was lived in the outdoors of Wyoming, hunting, fishing, canoeing, and shooting. He was happiest in a trout stream or beside a campfire. Jay married Mary Jo Goble in 1952, later divorced. He married Dee Fowler in 1978. They traveled extensively together, visiting 26 different islands. Jay is survived by his wife of 38 years DeLores (Dee), daughters Leah Smith and Laura Barnett (Ron), stepdaughter Nancy Pryor, stepson Tony Fowler, granddaughter Sarah Barnett, step-grandchildren Amber, Krista, Devin, Nick, Misty, and Sheena. He also has 8 step-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 25, 2017 at 11:00 am at Cornerstone Evangelical Free Church, 4100 Casper Mountain Road, with a reception to follow at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Central Wyoming Hospice and Transitions.
