James "Jim" Harvey Haines II was born March 1, 1940, in Buffalo, Wyo., to Catherine (Stapp) and James Haines. He died Nov. 30, 2013, at Central Wyoming Hospice in Casper, Wyo., of complications from Wegener's Granulomatosis. From Buffalo the family moved to Kaycee and then to Glendo, where Jim played on the football team and graduated from high school. Jim joined the Marine Corps and served in the Fleet Marine Force in Vietnam. He served in a variety of places and positions including the military police and marine motor transport. In Hawaii, Jim served as a bodyguard for President Dwight Eisenhower and received commendation as part of a team that thwarted an attempt on Eisenhower's life. While serving in the motor transport at Camp Pendleton, California, he met and married Judi Klein. Returning from the Marines, Jim went to work for Wheatland Lumber Co. While visiting family in Casper in 1964, he was encouraged to apply to the Casper Police Department, where he worked off and on until he retired from the CPD in 1996. He also worked for the Wyoming Highway Patrol, as chief of police in Glenrock, Wyo., the Adams County (Colorado) sheriff, Goshen County (Wyoming) sheriff, and Black Hills Bentonite in Casper. Upon his retirement from the Casper Police Department, Jim joined the U.S. Marshal's office and worked as lead court security at the federal courthouse in Natrona County where he served Federal Judge William Downes until his health forced Jim's second retirement in 2005. Jim loved animals and was an accomplished horseman and could ride a horse before he could walk. He enjoyed pleasure riding, ranch work and hunting on horseback. He started the Natrona County Mounted Police Patrol. He is survived by his wife, Judi; sons, Jim and Mike Haines; grandson, Cody Haines; granddaughter, Leanza Haines, great-granddaughter, Alleigh Foos; brothers, Lynn (Vicky) Haines, Larry (Barbara) Haines and Andy Sulik; aunt, Margaret Haines; a special cousin, Renae (Gary) Thomas; and other numerous cousins and friends.
