Gregory Ross Attaway, a man who loved the outdoors from his earliest adventures in California to his later years in Wyoming's wide open spaces, passed away Feb. 25, 2019, at the age of 61 in Casper. Greg was born on July 25, 1957, in Pasadena, Calif., to Donald Ross Attaway and Marilyn Helene Attaway, née Mazy. He was an adventurous child who loved wrestling, the Boy Scouts and was always the first to help those in need. His love of the outdoors withstood a harrowing night lost with his scout masters, father and brothers, unsheltered in the Joshua Tree National Park. There, the boys huddled together for protection against the desert cold. Instead of becoming afraid, Greg later volunteered with Boy Scout Search and Rescue teams as a teenager, the first to help others before considering his own safety. Greg battled Hodgkin's disease at age 14, and faced his treatment with strength of character that would become a hallmark of his life. Always positive and optimistic, Greg was a good man who encouraged others at every turn. Greg was a master in his chosen career field of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning technology. He taught adult education courses at trade schools in California, and was often lauded for his dedication to his students. He was always the first to help a neighbor with a broken air conditioner, often without charging for his services. He was also the first called when large companies needed his expertise on a tight schedule. He worked for ABM Services and at the Wyoming Medical Center in Casper. He loved his job as an expert in HVAC. He had friends all over the hospital and in all types of positions. He enjoyed meeting people and hearing their life stories. He had a knack for coming in with a smile, and always asked people about themselves. He radiated trustworthiness, and people trusted him with their life stories. Greg had two sons, Gregory Jr. and Blake, and he enjoyed taking his boys to the country's national parks, sharing with them his love of the outdoors. His sons remember their father as warm and welcoming, always friendly and open to those around him. He moved to Wyoming to be closer to his family and the outdoor spaces he loved, where he married wife Patricia Louise Bachand. Greg and Patty found each other later in life, and became soulmates. They had many outdoor adventures together in the Rocky Mountain region, across the world and had plans for even more adventures. Greg loved Wyoming and explored it with enthusiasm and wonder. He and Patty spent a weekend in a fire tower lookout in Bighorn National Forest, and they spent all their free time going on camping trips. Greg was crazy about all his grandchildren, and he loved the time he spent with them. Greg was preceded in death by his mother, Marilyn Attaway. He is survived by his father Donald Ross Attaway; his wife Patricia Louise Bachand; brother Russ and wife Nancy Attaway, brother Steve Attaway; son Greg Jr. and partner Michael; and son Blake and wife Melissa. He is also survived by his grandchildren Eliot, Grayson, Lennon, and Hudson Attaway; his step-sons C.J. Bachand and wife Clarissa, step-son Zach Bachand, wife Jennifer, and step-granddaughter Charlee Bachand. A memorial will be held Saturday, March 2, 2019, at 2 p.m. at Bustards Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations to a local charity of choice are welcome.
