George Welch

George Roy Welch, born June 14, 1922, went to see his 2 brothers, John and Gaylord. brother-in-law, Neal Phillippi, 2 nephews, Gaylord and Greg Welch, son-in-law Tom Schreiner, and son, Gary Welch on Father's Day, June 16, 2013. George is survived by his wife Bea of 72 years and daughter Georgia Welch - Schreiner of Casper, grand children, Ken Nelson (Carolyn)of Casper, Rick Nelson of Casper, Tammy Brooke (David) of Syracuse, UT, Taresa Schreiner (Ken Meyer) of Albany, OR , Brian, Brandon, Chris, and Terra Welch of Mesa, AZ; 23 great grandchildren, and 4 great-great grandchildren. He was a member of the Wyoming National Guard, 115th Calvary. They were deployed February, 1941 to Fort Lewis, WA where there patrolled along the coast on horseback searching for Japanese water mines and submarines. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor, The 115th served in Japan and in the Philippine Liberation; a very violent conflict in World War II. During his deployment their unit switched from using horses to using tanks. He left the service upon the surrender of Japan in 1945 as a Tank Crew Chief. After the war he returned to Casper and drove a supply truck for Morrison & Knudsen during the building of Kortes Damn. He then worked for Standard Oil Refinery, and later owned and operated Hilltop Standard Service until he sold out and purchased a bowling alley in Lander, WY. He moved the family to Southern California and joined the Pipe Fitters Union, working in this capacity and as Foreman for 27 years on the oil platforms off the coast of Long Beach; a huge factory in Death Valley and the San Onofre Nuclear Power Plant in California to name a few. After retirement he moved to Salem, Oregon and then back to Casper, where he had been raised and raised his own family. In 1995 he purchased the Fort Diablo Restaurant which he owned and operated until 2005. He was a lifelong member of the Elk's Lodge, Eagles Aerie, as well as 55 years in the Shrine Club. The family would appreciate memorial contributions in George's honor be made to the Shriner's Hospital in Salt Lake, UT. He will be missed.
