George Davis

George Davis passed away on November 11, 2020 at Central Wyoming Hospice in Casper, Wyoming.

George was fond of saying, “I was born in Wyoming, I lived my whole life in Wyoming and by God I’m going to die in Wyoming” and so he did, but not before living a full life in the Wyoming that he loved.

George was the first born (1932) of his siblings in the small town of Deaver in the Big Horn Basin. He was born on the farm to his mother Zelma (Schow) and George Davis.  His brother Ralph and sister Doreen soon followed.  George was raised on the farm and was active in 4-H where he won a trip to Washington D.C. to show his prize livestock.

In 1953 he married his high school sweetheart, Martha Henry.  A year later they welcomed their twins Mike and Marsha.  George often joked that when they realized babies could come in two’s, they called it quits.

He attended the University of Wyoming where he was awarded the bachelor of Science degree from the college of agriculture in 1954 and the master of Science degree in in Range Management in1959. In between those two degrees he served a stint in the United States Marines which was the only time he lived outside of Wyoming.

George could build anything. In fact, George and Martha built two homes, one in Torrington and the other in Casper. However the construction George was most proud of was his Rattlesnake Egg Box.  This was a cigar box with a large sign on top – “Caution – Rattle Snake Eggs”.  The box consisted of a rubber band attached to the sides and wound up with a pencil stub in the middle. When the box was opened, the pencil whirled sounding like a rattler was inside. The box often sat on his work desk and provided much amusement for him and his staff when an unsuspecting soul would want to see the eggs.

George served for a while as a high school teacher, an administrator in the Job Corp and very briefly as a real estate agent.  However, he spent most of his working life helping farmers and ranchers through is work for the Soil Conservation Service. When asked once about what he liked about his job, he replied, “I like helping people.”  And that statement sums up his way of viewing his life – he liked to help his family, his friends and even total strangers.

George’s beloved wife passed away in 1999. He is survived by his two children and their families.

The family wants to thank the staff at Primrose Retirement Center, Central Wyoming Hospice and Dr. Jason Lloyd for their professional and compassionate care for George.

A private family memorial service will be held this summer.
