Gary James Schmidt, age 68, died on August 8, 2019, in the comfort of his home, surrounded by his family, in Casper Wyoming. An Army Veteran, he was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star for his actions while serving in Vietnam. Gary is survived by his wife, Melinda Schmidt, of Casper, Wyoming; his sons, Jason and Ryan Schmidt, and five grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his father, Victor Schmidt of Bismarck North Dakota. Victor was also an Army veteran, and was awarded the Silver Star for his actions during World War II. Gary and Victor will always be remembered, together, for their service. Gary was born on August 26, 1950, in Bismarck, North Dakota, the second of eight children, to parents Victor and Minnie Schmidt. He graduated from Flasher High School in 1968. He promptly joined the Army and served two tours in Vietnam. Upon returning home, he married Melinda Krueger in 1973 and the couple enjoyed 45 years of marriage. He worked various jobs including gas station attendant, insurance salesman, and drill rig operator. The majority of his career was spent working as a letter carrier for the United States Post Office; he gave 33 years of exemplary service. Upon retirement, he volunteered for the Disabled American Veterans transportation department, and enjoyed providing rides for veterans to and from Casper and surrounding communities. Gary found peace and tranquility in the natural world. He enjoyed hunting and fishing all of his life. He also treasured time spent at his remote cabin property, which he and his wife poured their heart and soul into. He was a member of the Catholic parish, Our Lady of Fatima, in Casper Wyoming. A funeral for relatives and friends is scheduled for Gary on September 23, at 9am, at the Veterans Cemetery in Mandan, North Dakota. He will be placed in close proximity to his father, Victor Schmidt.
