Frances Hartung

December 15, 1923 — January 10, 2015

Frances Lee Cutchin Hartung, 91, passed to her eternal home on January 10, 2015. Born December 15, 1923 in Whitakers, North Carolina, she was the first child of James Elmer Cutchin and Anna Calphurnia (Callie) Bailey Cutchin. Frances grew up in Whitakers and graduated from Whitakers High School. She also attended Louisburg College in Louisburg, NC and the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. While working in Richmond, VA, she met a handsome Navy Lieutenant, and on February 17, 1946, in Whitakers, she married Frank M. Hartung of Cody, Wyoming. They lived on the base at Hawthorne, Nevada before moving to Wyoming, living briefly in Mills and then in Casper. It was in Casper that Frances and Frank spent the remainder of their married life and raised three children - Anne Claire, Frank Miles and Janet Lee. Frances enjoyed traveling with her husband and family around the United States and going on pack trips, led by Frank, in the Bridger-Teton Wilderness. She loved both her home state of North Carolina, where "the beauty was up close" and her adopted state of Wyoming where "the beauty was in the distance". She had no desire to leave Wyoming, and enjoyed the summers as well as the beautiful snowy winters. As a life-long Methodist, Frances cherished her church and was very involved in activities there. She was also actively involved in the Order of the Eastern Star (a Past Matron) and The Social Order of the Beauceant (a Past President), and was a member of U.D.C. and D.A.R. Frances was an avid reader and had an artistic flair which could be seen in her sewing, design and craft projects. She volunteered at her children's schools and in their activities. A very kind, loving and forgiving person, always looking for the best in people, Frances was devoted to her family, friends and church. Preceded in death by her parents, husband Frank, and daughter Janet Lee Shively, Frances is survived by her daughter Claire Schaefer and husband Jay of Laramie, WY, son Miles Hartung and Ruth Doyle of Casper, WY, and son-in-law Mark Shively of Laramie, WY; grandchildren - Paul Darden and wife Laura of Wilson, NC, Amy Darden of Raleigh, NC, Gina Shively and Ryan Ciolkosz of Anchorage, AK and Megan Shively of Laramie, WY; great-grandchildren Ben and Sarah Darden of Wilson, NC and Stryder Ciolkosz of Anchorage, AK; and sister, Ellie Prince Cutchin Lee of Whitakers, NC. She will truly be missed by all who knew and loved her and were blessed by her presence in their lives. When someone you love becomes a memory, the memory becomes a treasure - she is our Treasure. A celebration of her life is planned for January 31, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church of Casper, Wyoming with the Reverend Brian Oliver officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate memorials to the Hartung Memorial Mission Fund at the First United Methodist Church, 332 East 2nd Street, Casper, WY 82601.
