Mills resident Floyd W. Hutsell, 83, went to be with the Lord Thursday, Jan. 26, 2012, at Life Care Center in Casper. Floyd was born March 5, 1928, in an apartment above the Brady's Market on Poplar Street in Casper to Warner and Maudie Hutsell. The family lived in Missouri for a time before returning to Wyoming in 1944. He worked at the refinery briefly, as well as at various movie theaters as a door man during World War II. He was eventually drafted, but missed going to war by a scant two days. He was employed at the Wig Wam Bakery from 1946 to 1952 before going to work for his father at the Hutsell's Pay-N-Save Grocery in north Casper. The family moved the business to the Millview Shopping Center in Mills in the early 1960s, where he and Ruth operated the store until 1981, when Floyd retired. Floyd met Ruth Lowery in grade school in north Casper. They dated during their teen years and were married at the Mullen Club Sept. 20, 1947, by Father Grannin. They honeymooned at Esterbrook and afterward rented their Grandma Lowery's basement. They then lived on 15th Street in Casper until 1961, when they purchased a home and relocated to Mills, where the couple has since resided. Floyd and Ruth were the proud parents of four children, Janet, Kathy, Floyd, Jr. (Butch) and Billy. In addition to his talents as a grocer, Floyd was a gifted musician who played many venues across the state, particularly in the Casper area. He played in the Jim Cox and the Outlaws Band for many years, as well as with other musicians. But the joy of his life was teaching his grandsons to play the guitar, always emphasizing the importance of practice, practice and more practice. He was also a member of the Elks Club, a member of the local musicians' union, served on the Mills Town Council, was an avid hunter and fisherman, and loved spending time in the Big Horn and Teton mountains. The couple also maintained a summer home at Alcova Lake for many years, and wintered often in Arizona. Floyd's humor and wit brought great joy to his family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sons, Butch and Billy. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Ruth; daughters Janet (Kenny) Barrett, of Mills, and Kathy (Bobby) Waddell, of Casper; nine grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren and his brother Bob Hutsell of Texas. Services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 3, at Faith Bible Chapel, 504 N. Forest Dr., in Casper. Memorials may be sent to Life Care Center of Casper, 4041 S. Poplar St., Casper, WY 82601.
