DONA KAY (GALLES) SHOCKEY, “Moosie,” 68, of Casper, Wyoming, passed away March 6, 2024, in Casper, Wyoming.
DONA was born in Casper, Wyoming, on April 13, 1955, to Donald and Anne Galles. She attended schools in Casper, graduating from Natrona County High School in 1973. She worked in various jobs, including KATI Radio and the Casper Journal. Later, she served in many volunteer positions and worked for the March of Dimes.
In her earlier years, Dona enjoyed sewing and became a master seamstress over the years. She made her own beautiful wedding dress, as well as dresses for Gayle Garner Walsh and daughter Amber Nurmi.
Plagued from eye disease from early childhood, Dona became less and less able to see the intricacies of sewing. She learned computer-design, machine embroidery, and for years created beautiful embroidery on clothing and on high school sports wear.
Dona rarely turned down any requested volunteer assistance from elementary through high school years. She liked to say she was the official hugger for the younger kids after throat swabs or vaccines.
As her vision continued to change, Dona switched to kiln-fired glass artistry. She attended many years of glasswork national conferences in Las Vegas. Scores of friends enjoyed pendants as gifts, and many pendants and plates were donated to charitable functions. Dona also sharpened her casino skills there, though her achievement level at the slots lagged far behind the quality of her glasswork.
Along the way, Amber was born in 1974, Sean in 1980, Jeremy in 1982, and Kimby in 1985. Being the best mother possible was always Dona’s first priority. Sean’s death after only a few days left a life-long wound.
Dona grieved any story of the defenseless among us, from the unhoused, to the battered and beaten, to the victims and families of mass shootings.
Dona is survived by her husband, Gary Shockey, of Casper, Wyoming, Daughter Amber Nurmi of West Linn, Oregon, Son Jeremy Shockey of Portland, Oregon, and Daughter Kimberly Shockey of Casper, Wyoming. Five siblings survive, Thomas Galles, David Galles, Laura (Galles) Claunch, Karla (Galles) Dundas, and Jeff Galles, all of Casper, Wyoming. She has been blessed with four grandchildren, J.D. Nurmi, of Tucson, Arizona, Anna Nurmi and Esme Nurmi, of West Linn, Oregon, and Sonny Shockey, of Portland, Oregon. Many nieces and nephews, as well as grand nieces and grand nephews, also survive. Dona was preceded in death by her father, Don Galles, and her mother, Anne Galles.
Memorial service will be held at Bustard’s Funeral home in Casper on March 9, 2024, at 9:30 a.m. A viewing will be held the evening of March 8, 2024, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery immediately following Saturday service.
After a brief graveside service, there will be a reception with buffet offerings at Occasions by Cory, shortly after noon.
Flowers would be appreciated; Dona’s family suggests donations to Seton House, 333 E. H St., Casper, Wyoming, www.setonhousecasper.com.
