Dawn Carpenter

Dawn L. Carpenter A celebration of the life of Dawn L. Carpenter will be held at St. Marks Episcopal Church on May 10, 2015 at 1 :00 pm. Dawn died peacefully at home with his wife Barbara at his side. He was born March 25, 1929 in Sargent, Nebraska, the youngest of seven children of William Carpenter and Nellie (Woods) Carpenter. Dawn's family migrated from Nebraska to Riverton Wyoming in 1934 where his family homesteaded in Paradise Valley just north of Riverton. Dawn attended school in Riverton excelling athletically in football as a quarterback and track focusing on throwing the discus. Dawn graduated from Riverton High School in 1948. He spent two years at the University of Wyoming as a member of Sigma Chi fraternity, going to school and throwing the discus on the track team before joining the US Marine Corps. He served in Korea with the 1 st Marine Division. After leaving the Marine Corp he returned to the University of Wyoming, graduating with a B.S. Degree in 1956. While attending the University of Wyoming the second time, he met Barbara Kidd who became his beautiful bride on July 27, 1957 and they had 58 years of marital bliss. After graduating he was employed by Sinclair Oil & Gas Company as a Scout/Landman. He worked 12 years with Sinclair before he went to work for Cleveland Cliffs Iron Company in the Casper office buying Uranium leases and establishing mining claims in Wyoming, Colorado, and Montana. Dawn formed his own independent company in 1974. After 38 volatile, years in the mining, oil and gas industry he retired in 1995. It was time to spend time with his growing extended family and travel and they did. They made trips to Arizona, Canada, Alaska, England, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand, Costa Rica and Panama Canal. There were numerous hunting, fishing and camping trips over the years with the family. The most memorable adventure he had was fly fishing in Iceland where he broke the record for the most salmon caught on a fly rod. Survivors include Kimberley (James) Nyenhuis of Ft. Collins, CO., William (Linda) Carpenter of Anchorage, AK, Bradley (Hollie) Carpenter of Casper, Kristin (Douglas Queen) of Casper, and Kelley and her fiance Bill Klein of Wheatland, WY. Grandchildren: Riley, Brooke, and John Nyenhuis, Sarah and Kyle Carpenter, Colten (Michelle) and Cayl Carpenter, Saren and Siri Queen, Hannah and Hayden Hocker, Stephanie, Robin, Tyler and Katie Klein. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Meals on Wheels, The Make a Wish Foundation or the donor's choice.
