Byron Henry Brater was born on October 2, 1935 in Iowa City, Iowa. He was the oldest son of George L. and Evelyn (Crow) Brater. He was soon joined by two siblings, Bob and Beverly. Byron proudly served his country in the Army from June 1954 to June 1957. He was stationed in Alaska and San Francisco. He held many jobs throughout his life including butcher, oilfield worker, dog catcher, and security guard. Byron was a hard worker and loved his family and his Lord. He married Janice Ruth Twidale on April 26, 1962 in Williston, North Dakota. To this union three sons were born – Samuel Byron, Nathan Henry, and Stephen George. Janice died in June of 1977 and Byron reared the three boys on his own after that. He always kept them in church and sacrificed to have them in the Christian school. He was a faithful member of Lighthouse Baptist Church, driving the bus to pick up kids, singing in the choir, and serving as a deacon. He accepted Jesus as his personal Savior as a young man and is now enjoying the glories of heaven because of that decision.
Byron was preceded in death by his wife; sister, Beverly Bielen; brother-in-law, Hardy Bielen; sister-in-law, Pat Brater; and niece, Nikki Brater Cuomo. He is survived by his three sons, Sam (Bonnie), Nate (Kim), and Steve; eight grandchildren, Bryce (Samantha), Stephen, Megan (Garrett), Brandon (Alayna), Bethany (Jason), AmyJo, Mandy, and Katie; five great grandchildren; his brother Bob; and several nieces and nephews. He passed away on Sunday morning, October 13, 2024, at Garden Square Assisted Living where he has resided for the past 7 years, after having a stroke.
