Memorial services will be held for Betsy L. Lewis on Wednesday, December 29, 2010 at First United Methodist Church in Casper, WY at 2:00 P.M. She died at Central Wyoming Hospice Home in Casper, WY on Dec. 24, 2010 following a brief illness. She was 89. Betsy was born on July 29, 1921 in Ft. Smith, AR to A.R. Miller and Cora (Weatherford) Miller. After graduating from Ft. Smith High in 1939, she began working for Southwest Bell. It was there in Arkansas that she met the love of her life, Vernon Lewis, who was stationed at Ft. Chaffee. They fell in love, but decided not to marry until his return from his deployment in the European theater of WWII. Betsy and Vernon were wed in Ft. Smith on September 14, 1946. In time, Betsy and Vernon welcomed three daughters to their family. They moved frequently due to Vernon's work, settling finally in Casper in 1971. Betsy worked in several different capacities during her years of employment, but she was most proud of her time at Casper College, where she retired in 1987. Betsy was anything but retiring in her golden years. She worked as a hospital volunteer at WMC, a volunteer at the Nicolaysen Art Museum, and was very active in her church and Chapter O, P.E.O. A wonderful mother and grandmother, she was endlessly supportive of her daughters and their families. Betsy's interests included reading, playing bridge, and spending time with her friends and family. Even though Betsy's formal education was interrupted by WWII, then marriage, and family, Betsy is remembered as a voracious reader with an unquenchable desire to learn. She was an inspiration to her children with the breadth of her knowledge. Betsy was preceded in death by her beloved Vernon, her parents and one brother, Cecil Miller. She is survived by daughters Carol (Mark) Glenn of Leadville, CO, Cindy (Joe) Bonds of Cheyenne, WY, and Beth (Rob) Shively of Casper, WY. Seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren also survive her. In lieu of flowers, memorials to First United Methodist Church, P.E.O. Educational Projects, or Central Wyoming Hospice would be equally appreciated by the family.
