Art Hurlbut

April 15, 1956 — July 24, 2020

Arthur Gray Hurlbut Jr, graduated from Kelly Walsh High school in 1974. Art moved to Montana after graduation to work for his uncle Jim, and learned about the uranium and oil logging industry. This job training led him to move back to Casper in 1975 which he called home. He continued working for different logging companies and was instrumental in finding several of the coal seams that powered Dave Johnston power plant in Glenrock, Wyoming. He met Carol Jean Gustafson in 1976 in which they later wed in 1978. Art also worked for energy companies combining his problem solving skills and working independently in the oil field and directional drilling. This led Art to set up a drilling site in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia in Feb. 1982. Later on that year, Art and Carol welcomed their first child Jennifer. In 1988 Art was hired by AirTouch Cellular which later was bought by Verizon Wireless. Art was responsible for the successful installation of the first cellular tower in Wyoming on Casper Mountain. Art was the only cellular technician for the company in Wyoming for the first three years while bringing more cellular sites online. Art and Carol welcomed their second child, Benjamin in 1991. He retired from Verizon in 2012 in Surprise, AZ.

Arthur was well known for his steadfast humor, charisma, and his ability to light up the room. He was a joy to be around, and he was always willing to help someone in need. Despite growing up with a tight budget, he was the most generous person and would happily give his last penny if he knew someone needed it. He grew up in the Lutheran church and had a strong faith that he expressed during good times and bad. He tried hard to instill the word of God into his children’s lives. He was passionate about life, music, and he loved deeply. He was a dedicated provider and he worked hard to make sure the people he loved and cared for were taken care of. His work ethic was second to none, almost to a fault. He was the true definition of a “company man” and he loved his job. His work was his life and passion. He dreamed big, and whether or not it came to fruition, he had a perspective about life that was both refreshing and comforting. He brought out the best in those around him, and spread happiness to many lives through his constant “dad jokes” (Groaners) if you will.  He was a talented guitarist, whom performed in a band for several years. He had a knack for teaching others to play guitar and when he played it’s like he went into another world.  He often was the happiest guy in the room, and he could light up the room in an instance. His laugh was infectious. Words cannot describe how much he is loved and how much he will be missed.

Arrangements are entrusted to the care of Bustard & Jacoby Funeral Home , 600 CY Avenue, Casper, WY 82601.
