Arletta Erickson

January 31, 1925 — February 27, 2015

Artie Erickson, age 90 passed away February 27 after a battle with cancer. She is survived by her son Brent Erickson of Alexandria, Virginia and her daughter-in-law Susan Schuetz Erickson of Casper. Artie was the wife of former Casper College basketball coach Oscar "Swede" Erickson. She grew up in Versailles, Missouri and she moved to Kansas City, Missouri during WWII where she worked for Aetna Life insurance. She then moved to the medical reporting division of a Pratt and Whitney aircraft plant building B-52 bombers. This was followed by a stint at the War Assets Administration. While in Kansas City she met her future husband Swede who was a football player at Kansas State University at the time. She married Swede in 1947 and they moved to Eureka, Kansas where Swede had a coaching job. They moved to Midwest, Wyoming in 1951 where Swede was the basketball coach at Midwest High School. After two years they moved to Casper when Swede became the head basketball coach and assistant football coach at NCHS. After Swede moved to Casper College the basketball players often called her Mrs. Coach and she cooked them many meals while they studied at her house in the evening. Artie worked for many years as the assistant to the principal at Park Elementary school. Later she took a position as assistant librarian at Dean Morgan junior high school. Then she worked for Senator Alan K. Simpson in his Casper field office for twelve years prior to her retirement in 1990. She was an active member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church for over sixty years. She also took great pride and joy in her PEO membership. Artie was an accomplished seamstress and an avid flower gardener. She was also an avid Platte River fisherwoman and caught several trophy trout during her lifetime. She was a loving wife, mother and a good friend to many and she will be greatly missed. Funeral Services will be held at Our Saviors Lutheran Church at Thursday, March 5 at 2:00PM. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers please send donations to the Artie and Swede Erickson fund at the Casper College Foundation, 125 College Dr., Casper, WY 82601.
