Albert Schilling

December 14, 1932 — September 27, 2015

Albert R. "Dick" Schilling was born on December 14, 1932, to Richard and Elizabeth (Jones) Schilling. He was the first boy and had one brother and five sisters. He was born in Midland, South Dakota where he grew up. He worked on a farm as a child helping his family. In July of 1954, Dick joined the Army. He served as a cook in Japan shortly after the Korean War ended. There he prepared menus and cooked for soldiers serving our country. He was honorably discharged from the United States Army and Army Reserves in March of 1962. In 1957, Dick met Shirley Slater who would soon become the love of his life. They married on June 27, 1959. Together, they moved to Billings where their first born son, Byron Leon, was born on March 28, 1960. While in Billings, Dick worked for Pierce Packing Company as a meat packer. Shortly after Byron was born, the family moved to Sheridan where Dick worked for Huesman Brothers Construction for a short time. Dick soon received a job as a farmer in Ucross, Wyoming, where they added to their family with their daughter Kristie Ann. Dick continued to work for Mr. Bolinger on the farm. The kids enjoyed their time on the farm, especially when Dick let Byron and Kris have their "pet pigs" in the house. Dick also showed them how to feed the baby sheep with bottles. Dick took his knowledge of farming and moved the family back to Sheridan to work for Northern Seed Company. This is where he began his career as a great "Customer Service" provider. Dick found out about a job in Casper with U.S. Welding through his wife Shirley. Together, they loaded up Kris and Byron and moved to Casper in 1970 to work for N.A and Ruth Wolfe. This began his long career as a Truck Driver. On July 13, 1971, God called Byron home from church camp. Through this, Dick came to know Christ as his savior. He attended Calvary Baptist Church where he took much joy over the years serving others there. Then, in April of 1974, they added Kimberly Jo to their family. Dick continued to drive truck and haul welding and gas supplies for over 31 years. This was the pride and joy of his life. He lived to service those customers out over the roads. He drove over 1.5 million miles in his lifetime. As U.S. Welding shifted names to Gasses Plus, Dick found himself as the 1997 Third Quarter Truck Driver of the Year for the State of Wyoming. His award credited him be being a professional truck driver, a multi-talented person. He had to make more decision and perform more varied tasks in a single day than most workers do in a month.....His attitude, humor and friendliness toward customers certainly elevated each customer's awareness and image of the company." Dick definitely helped grow U.S. Welding and Gasses Plus into the business they were. He loved his job. When it came to retiring, Dick couldn't settle. He went and found the job he always dreamed of having - driving truck across the United States working for Cowboy Transportation. This was the happiest time of his life as he was able to see all parts of this country. Dick left this earth to meet his Lord on Sunday, September 27th, 2015. He was surrounded by his family and is happier than ever to be reunited with his Savior and his son. Dick is survived by his wife, Shirley of 56 years, his daughters, Kris (Steve) Olsen and Kimberly (Shane) Sullivan, granddaughters, Charissa (Kevin) Pownell, Courtney (Mace) McMahan, and Jerra Sullivan, great-grandchildren Koltyn, Aunya, Kyla, Kylinn, Paige, Sofie, Kespyn, and baby McMahan. Dick is also survived by his sisters Dorothy (Ed) Doud, Margaret (Rodney) Fraizer, and brother Bill Schilling, numerous nieces and nephews and sister-in-law Judy Engle. Dick was preceded in death by his son, Byron Leon, parents Richard and Elizabeth, and sisters Ethel, Barb, and Betty and two great-grandchildren. Donations can be made to the family in honor of furthering his grandchildren and great-grandchildren's education.
